Brocky’s Big Day Out For Charity

22nd February 2004

A very early wake up call for a Sunday morning to arrive at Repco in Bayswater at a very refreshing time of 7.30am, to meet up with the 60-80’s Holden Enthusiasts club, the Monaro club, the EH club and us. Not a huge turn out for us, due to quite a few cars getting ready for up and coming events. Our cars were Brett’s LX Chev Torana, Ado’s Pannel Van (Vannen), Kath’s Gemini (Lolion), Deb’s EH (EHGIRL), My LH Torana and 2 other Torana’s who tagged along with us.

We left just after 8am, cruising up Dorset road, onto Maroondah Hwy and left onto Victoria road in Lilydale where all cars met up again. From where I was standing, I could not see the lead car. The number of cars was enormous. Once all cars pulled of to the side, one by one we pulled out and cruised all together to Yarra Glen racecourse. It is a fantastic cruise with these car clubs from Lilydale to Yarra Glen.

Once we were in the gates, we found a spot to set up our cars and display. We were all very busy doing final cleaning, polishing, etc on our cars before the public came in. Time for breakfast and have a look around. I noticed two, showroom condition VW beetles. As I took a closer look I was more impressed. The engines were highly polished and detailed in every way. There was a good display of HDT/HSV cars, Brock Commodores, some circuit raced Torana’s including Brock’s sons purple XU1, Old Chev’s and Corvette’s.

Cars were still coming in late morning, including, the Commodore car club. Some interesting cars and modifications to make their cars look “sick mate”. As last year was a huge turnout, I was expecting this year to be the same. Unfortunately it was not, probably due to the grape grazing festival which was on this weekend. But still, a very impressive turnout.

As the afternoon came around, they were auctioning off Brocky merchandise to help funds for his foundation. After the auction, they held the presentation for the 12 or so different car model categories. However, I did not stay and cannot say what cars won. A good day in all and hope to see you there next time.
