Night Cruise To Tullamarine Airport

17th April 2004

Mmmm…. Love those night cruises! On Saturday the 17th April we headed off on what I called my ‘Sort-of-Mystery-Cruise’ – on account of the fact that I had pretty much told everyone where we were going before I found out that it was supposed to be a secret! Ha ha! (picture Nelson Munz laughing!)

We met at Club Kilsyth car park at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm departure – and proceeded to cruise through Croydon, Ringwood, Nunawading, then onto the Eastern Freeway. We got off at Bulleen Rd and went through Heidelberg (almost the reverse of the 2-run-run to the Pancake Parlour), and then cruised up Manningham Rd/ Banksia St/ Bell St through Preston – then onto the Tullamarine Freeway towards… Melbourne Airport.

It turns out there is a fantastic viewing area of the runway on the eastern side of the airport (towards Sunbury). Although I had heard wild, wild rumours of this being an excellent place to ‘park’ years before - I strangely had never had the pleasure until I practice ran the cruise a few nights before. No Tim, not by myself!

Anyways, needless to say that a great night was had by all – despite the sub-zero temperatures that threatened to turn us all into human icicles (hmmmm…) – we had the BBQ trailer with us which did provide some heat however. The sight of the planes going so closely overhead was awesome – only to be matched by Gabby counting the flying elephants (you had to be there).

All in all, a good night – great to see new members on the cruise (although was sadly reminded by the absence of my own little yellow Torana) – good on you Mick, Kath and Tim for showing such enthusiasm early on – see you all on the next cruise!
