Woori Yallock Hotel Pub Lunch Cruise

9th May 2004

Flowing hills, winding roads, and views that describe serenity. It was a fantastic morning run on Sunday 9th May. Mother’s Day made the run to Woori Yallock a bit small in numbers but there was plenty of spirit to make up for it. Some were even able to incorporate the both with their parents coming for the ride. But for the most of us it was a good chance to take the car out for a nice Sunday cruise.

This was the first club run I had been on. It was great to spend time with other people who had some appreciation for a fine automobile. We met up at the infamous Club Kilsyth. This was a good chance to meet a few of the others before we headed off. Quickly realizing this club was really for anyone who loves cars and cruising. This is something usually hard to come by but greatly appreciated by those who don’t always fit into the more specific clubs.

Standing around we were passed the directions clearly stating how to get to… Woori Yallock? This was a mild surprise as the run was first intended for St Andrews Pub (Big difference). But due to a large booking for Mother’s Day we would have missed out on a meal (not good!). So thankfully Woori Yallock Pub had plenty of room and great service to provide. The change of destination was not a concern by any means.

Being close to the hills it didn’t take much more that a few k’s before the roads were engulfed by trees and green surroundings. We passed through the back of Ferntree Gully and started on our windy ascent up through the Dandenongs.

The group was able to stay together fairly well. A great sight, seeing shiny chrome wheels and highly polished paint reflecting the waves of light flickering through the trees.

As we passed through several small towns including Emerald, Nangana, Avonsleigh, and Yellingbo, there were some spectacular views of wide open land. Able to see far off into the horizon were stunning arrays of green pastures. It was such a satisfying feeling rolling with the hills. Between each of the areas we were given changes from sweeping corners to long straights (a few of us utilizing this opportunity to stretch out our cars).

Any one on the trip would remember the ‘slow van’. It held us up for a while before running off the road. He was a confused driver at best. He also split up the group allowing a few luck ones to get a free run. Some pulled up to let others catch up. We weren’t too far spread out (despite Mr. Slow van weirdo man!). He did prove to be a bit entertaining and gave us all something to talk about later.

Before long we were there. Cars lined up for parking which proved to be tight. But alas, we were closer to lunch. With the cars piled up we headed for the entrance. We went inside and were seated in a very well presented room dedicated to those on the club run. It was a gorgeous wood paneled room with large dark timber beams and trusses. It gave you a warm homely feeling of a country place. The friendly staff seated us around a large table and I mean large table. It was decorated with flowers and laid out almost too fine for a bunch of revheads. I assure you it did not go unnoticed.

I was quickly informed not to get too comfortable, as most cruises don’t end up at such glamorous locations. So we made the most of it by spreading out and relaxing. There was an entrée of delicious soup, nice and warming. Perfect for the cool weather. Our orders were taken and in a short time we were presented with a fine plate of steaming hot food. The smell was mouth watering. I had a spectacular roast that I couldn’t get enough of.

Mealtime was a great chance to get to know the others. I had a million questions and I think a few people found it hard to eat with me asking so much. But with some finishing off with a luscious dessert we were ready to leave.

We said our goodbyes and made our own way home. It was only a short trip along the Warburton Hwy and we were back to where we started.

One thing was evident throughout the day - the people were friendly. They didn’t mind at all my repetitive queries and made me feel very welcome and a part of the club. I personally love long drives through the countryside. It’s one of my favorite past times. But what made this cruise special was the people I could enjoy it with. People who were just there to drive. Where the journey is the motivation for the trip not just the destination.

I hope you too can experience such an enjoyable event on the next one.

Till then, driveacarsideways….
