“Swingers” Cruise - Warburton

5th June 2005

Well what a great cruise. I can honestly say I had a whole lot of fun!! Fantastic weather, great cars, and great people meant for some top cruising. Of course, this was a cruise with a twist!! The whole concept of the “Swinger’s cruise” was suggested at a club meeting one night, and thanks to Kath putting in all the hard work with great organising, it turned into a big success. Particularly for the passengers….

For those who weren’t there, it was as simple as this – all the driver’s keys were placed into a bowl, from which all the passengers then randomly picked out a set, and that determined which car they went in for the next leg of the journey!

We had a total of just under 30 people in 14 cars. The actual cruise route itself was the best I've been on for a long time. We headed straight for the hills, heading up Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd with lots of the twisty stuff. Then it was on to Lilydale, Healesville, and finally out just past Warburton. AWESOME roads & scenic countryside, it was definitely a winner. A total of 5 passenger changes. Whilst I was the only one to do it, I decided to actually hand over the keys for lxchev to my passengers and let them take me for a cruise! They really seemed to appreciate that with grins all round, and I got to feel what 383 cubes feels like from the passenger seat.... Great fun! And yes, they were all people I trusted! One of my passengers was only 8 years old though, so he didn’t get to drive! Sorry about that little dude.

Just to add yet another twist to the day, Kath decided she would keep us all very busy by setting up a series of activities at some of the stops. At the first stop, driver/passenger teams had their legs tied together to compete in “3-legged racing” across an oval. It was here that I quickly discovered Dave J and I do NOT have the same sized legs. As we battled our way across the oval, our harmonics were shot. Kinda like an un-balanced crank. Not good. We survived, and a lot better than some of the others, let me tell you! The winners received some prizes and then it was back into the cars with a fresh set of passengers. Next stop – apple bobbing. What a sight indeed. Always a great laugh. On various other legs of the journey we also had questions to answer and things to collect. How about collecting “a legal and interesting object”, yep that resulted in some weird and wonderful things being presented!

The day ended up with a very casual BBQ lunch just the other side of Warby. Throughout the day, various people were also busily taking photos, especially since we had quite a few new cars along, and also some cars that hadn’t been out to play for a while. So all in all, it really was a good day. The whole idea was just to have fun meeting new people and finding out more about fellow members. I’d say it worked a treat. Cruising back home with Bryan following me in his HZ Panno, we stumbled across a car show in Warby so we stopped in there to check that out too. A couple of flamed customs, some vintage & classic stuff, a couple of really trick old Holden’s, and some army trucks so that was worth the quick stop (I think we missed the main show though). Anyway, catch ya on the next one….
