Shannon’s Classic Australian Car Show – Sandown

Sun 18th June 2006

We had a small, but cool & colourful selection of cars on the cruise as we headed out to Sandown to show our cars and to check out lots of other cool rides. After meeting at the Arboretum in FTG around 9am, we headed off with Bryan’s Panelvan, Big Brett’s LX SS hatch, Simon’s VK, I took my hatchback with the Torana BBQ trailer on the back, whilst Deb got the keys to the Chevy powered beast. And a couple of new cars came along with us too – Leigh & Stacey in a beautiful 400 Chev powered 2 door Monaro, and Steve & Julz in the tough LX Hatchback.

Arriving at Sandown just before open-time (9:30am), we were greeted with massive amounts of Australian made cars. The turnout was excellent, the only downside to this meaning a long wait in the lines to get in. But it was a good chance to black the tyres and finish cleaning up the cars.

Once inside, we found a nice grassy area to setup a basic display. Up went the club banner, and some of our parking signs left over from Springnats. The BBQ trailer came in very handy throughout the day (comfiest seats in the whole place!!), and got many looks from the public who were wondering what the heck it was!!

It was a great show with all makes and models on display making sure there was something of interest for everybody. From completely original ‘oldies’ to fully modified late models, and everything else you could imagine. Plenty of real neat cars to check out, the source of good and bad ideas!

Dave J and Liz were hard at work with Shannon’s Insurance, and throughout the day, quite a few Eastside guys and girls came through for a look too. By early afternoon it was time for a small trophy presentation. Various Holden categories were first, followed by Ford, and finishing with a couple for the Chrysler owners. The winning cars were all extremely nice examples. The day then wound day pretty quick. A few of us hung around to take some happy snaps up on the grass, especially since the sun had decided to finally come out after hiding for most of the day. Overall, an excellent show, and a very laid-back afternoon.
