Phillip Island Go Kart Day

Sat 27th October 2007

The day started at Spotlight in Bayswater for a cruise down to the island and thanks to the great weather everyone was able to wind the windows down and enjoy the drive. Others of us thought we'd hit the beach first and then meet at the track.

After we all met up at the track at 3pm it was time for a quick briefing by one of the track official's. It was all the standard stuff where they wanted us to take it easy (as if) and not use them as bumper karts (fair enough). However after the pit lane was open it was pedal down and forget the rules.

The track is fantastic - a little over 720 metres long and is a scale replica of the 4.5km Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The karts were set up just about right and were pretty even as we all had to swap karts after each race. The karts had enough power and got sufficient speed over Lukey Heights (left hand hill climb into a blind drop off and tight right hander), to get light and twitchy.

After 30 minutes of racing it was time to pack up, no big stacks occurred. However it was still event filled racing, consisting of some great spins, some racing nudges and not to mention scaring the slower non Eastside racers that came out on the track for the later races. During pack up one of the pit officials commented that he was very surprised to see that Adam's kart had started to delaminate its front right tyre, which just proves how hard the karts were pushed.

Overall the day was fantastic, the weather was great and before we cruised home everyone sat out on the grass for an hour comparing race stories and battle wounds.

Bring it on next year!!
