Gazzanats (Calder Park)

8 - 9 March 2008

Hi all. As most will be aware of, Gazzanats was held for the first time at Calder Park in March. I, along with a handful of others from the club, entered and had quite a good time.

It didn't start out so well though. Saturday morning there was a cruising session that was supposed to incorporate rolling start drags, but I think the officials didn't know that or forgot, because it took a bit of hassling before the officials realised and finally opened the main straight up for us. A couple minutes later they kicked us off the track though!! How annoying! There was a bit of downtime between events too, but thankfully they got their act together by the afternoon session because I was seriously not going to bother going back on Sunday if there wasn't any improvement.

The rest of the weekend was much better though and was made up of go-to-whoa, rolling start drags, dial your own drags, burnouts, and show n shine. Sometimes the cruising sessions were a bit like the Monash freeway at peak hour, but with any luck next year they will listen to the punters and divide the track so the rip-a-skidders don't hold up the cruisers too much.

It was pretty hot out there but fortunately my car doesn't seem to be too bothered about the heat. The car ran sweet all weekend and the only problem encountered was a blow out on the tow truck on the way in on Sunday morning. Luckily we were only 5 or 6 k's away from Calder when it happened. We continued on and unloaded the Mazda then made our way down to Tyrepower Sunshine where the friendly people there fixed us up in no time. The only event I missed out on was burnouts, which I wasn't entering anyhow. So it worked out well.

Overall I must congratulate the organizers for their efforts. Because lets face it, any new opportunity for us enthusiasts to get out there and throw our cars around is worth supporting. Amazingly, with only around 5 entrants and no real display, Eastside Cruisers won the best club award! I don't think we had much competition though - with only one other club entered that we knew of. Hopefully if we have more members willing to enter next year, we can do it properly and make a real impact. I also managed to pick up 2nd Engineered and 2nd Iron Maiden!
