Easternats - Sandown Raceway

10th - 12th April 2009

G'day cruisers and cruiserettes I have been approached to do a bit of a spiel on the 2009 Easternats. As I was only there on the Sunday I didn’t see a hell of a lot and only really watched the stampede and the burnouts. There were a record amount of entrants this year with a total of 748 cars entered and participating in the drag racing and show and shine. A further 85 were on display on the Monday bringing the entry level to over 800.

The stampede was a bit different this year. Instead of driving up and doing a hoop and continuing, it was a power skid from point A to point B with no brake involved to see who could go the distance with wheels spinning, and who could produce the most smoke. I was quite impressed with James Mackie's pass; drifting the straight and corner. There were also a couple of other guys that did the same thing. I apologize as I do not know the results for the event. I tried to research them but could not find them on any websites at the time.

Onto the burnouts. The burnouts started off with Steve Loader in the blown HT Prem (UCSMOKE), Gary Myers in the XAcuter, and Clint Ogilvie in the pink (FRONT BACK) LC Torana doing simultaneous skids, popping 6 tyres at once. You really only got to see about half a hoop before the cars were gone in a big cloud of smoke. It was very impressive for me being a skid fanatic; I thought the burnouts were a fantastic event, apart from the amount of V6 Commodores (sorry Bryan!) Among some of the favourites was big bad Leroy driving a blown big block powered statesman (BIGV8) who caught the tyres on fire towards the end which looked ace.

Another favourite was a guy driving a HG Holden Ute, I’m unsure of his name, however he had a wheelchair strapped in the back and was paralysed from the waist down, he used hand controls which impressed the hell out of me. Unfortunately he hit the wall at the end of his pass and bent his quarter panel but never the less very impressive. Again I apologize as don’t know the results for the event but I believe Scrott made it into the top 25 in his 308 powered Corolla only to cease his engine on the Monday from what he was telling me.

It was a great day for the event, the sun was shining, plenty of trade stands and there was a great variety of cars, but I’d say way too many Commodores. Sorry to all you Commodore fans out there! All in all it was a great day and I had a ball. I would advise anyone who's interests lie in hot cars, burnouts, drags, show cars, trade stands or even just having a perve to go to this event, there is something for everybody at the Easternats, even the kids.
